A Flashback to the 70s at McCombs

Students and staff dressed up as hippies, flower children, and disco dancers at McCombs Middle School for their flashback to the 1970’s trivia contest on October 31st.

Classes teamed up to answer 25 trivia questions that were announced over the PA system from make-believe 70’s characters like The Fonz and Marcia Brady. 70’s music played over the intercom as students rushed through the hallways to answer scavenger hunt questions, and in the classrooms, teams worked together using lifelines to look up 1970’s history.

They learned about Newell D. McCombs, who served as superintendent for Des Moines Public Schools from 1941 to 1956. The event celebrated McCombs’ 40 year heritage and 1972 construction as well as the recent $6.8 million renovations. Improvements include eight new classrooms, a renovated auditorium, elimination of mobile classrooms, upgrades in lighting, security and technology, and window and door replacement.

“All school spirit events are intended to show our appreciation for the beautifully renovated facility,” said Nancy Croy, McCombs principal. “The McCombs community wishes to acknowledge our past and embrace our future. We are proud of past traditions and look forward to many productive years in our updated facility.”
