No Cost Meals Available this Fall at McCombs

Students at 35 Des Moines schools and three learning centers can now eat breakfast and lunch at no cost because of a special U.S. Dept. of Agriculture program targeting high poverty schools throughout the U.S. The move will ensure students are focused on learning and not on hunger. More than 150 middle school students were honored on-stage at North High School for outstanding achievement in a variety of categories. Each DMPS Middle School was represented at the 1st Annual Stellar Awards and each student took home a standing plaque and a book, highlighting the quality recognized that evening. Special thanks to former American Idol contestant Dave Pittman, who came to sing and talk to our students about character building and bullying. Pittman was bullied as a kid because he has turret syndrome. He did a terrific job and the kids responded well to his visit.

School Among Nation’s Top Energy Savers

DMPS learned today that three schools – McCombs, Moulton and Studebaker – were top finishers in the EPA’s 2013 Energy Star National Building Competition. In fact, Studebaker and McCombs finished 7th and 8th overall out of more than 3,000 buildings from across the nation that took part in the energy efficiency contest.
