Two outstanding McCombs Middle School students will be honored on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston, IA. Maria Cruz and Amie Berndt will receive Honorable Mentions for Outstanding After School Students. The 2013 Impact After School Champions Awards Reception will honor not only outstanding students like Maria and Amie but also key champions for after school programs this year. Maria and Amie were nominated for their leadership and participation in the McCombs Middle School Chrysalis After School- PRIDE group by group facilitators Michelle Buhr and Sarah May.

Please read below for detailed information regarding Maria and Amie’s accomplishments.

Maria Cruz:
I have had the pleasure of knowing Maria for 2 years now- both as her Reading/Language Arts teacher and as her facilitator for PRIDE. I always think to myself about how easy teaching would be with a  classroom full of Marias. She is a perfect example of the qualities that we strive to encourage in our after school group. Maria shows leadership in all areas through her consistent modeling of respectful, responsible, and kind behavior towards both adults and students. She can always be counted on to do the right thing. She also is very good at helping and reaching out to her fellow students.

Amie Berndt:
I have had the pleasure of knowing Amie for 2 years now as her facilitator for PRIDE. Amie is an extremely gifted student. She always models positive behavior and responsibility in all areas of her school day. She is very involved in activities outside of school- both sports and also volunteering in and around the community through her church. Amie shows leadership in our group as she has mentored new and younger members and also volunteers to lead activities within the group. I know that Amie will be successful in anything she decides to pursue in the future.

Congratulations to Maria Cruz and Amie Berndt for their leadership, exemplary behavior, and outstanding commitment to representing their Chrysalis After School group and McCombs Middle School in the best way possible!
